Young entrepreneurs from South Essex College benefitted from a talk by one of the UK’s wealthiest businessmen.

David Gold, who is famous for running companies such as Kickerbox, Gold Aviation, Ann Summers and West Ham United Football Club, held the talk at Bromley College on Tuesday 17 November.

The event was held for students across the country who are studying with the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy.

The 76-year-old gave a valuable insight into the world of business and spoke about how Ann Summers was born as well as his passion for football which saw him save Birmingham City from financial ruin. The story of how he bought his boyhood club, West Ham United, with Co-Chairman, David Sullivan, was a hot topic of discussion.

One Peter Jones Academy student, 16-year-old Jade Donald from Shoeburyness, said it was a valuable experience.

She said: “David gave us a real insight into his life where he discussed growing up in abject poverty.  He talked about resilience, courage and determination as they are key attributes to success in business which are skills all entrepreneurs need to have.  He was so humble and was happy to pose for selfies with us which made my day.”

Course Team Leader, Steve Newman, was also impressed. He said: “This is the fourth time I have taken the students to see David and each time his life story gets more fascinating. The students were all professionally presented and had the opportunity to ask David lots of business questions, his answers were absorbed like a sponge.”
