A South Essex College Public Services student has become the first Essex Police Cadet to progress on to the Special Constabulary.

Ellie Herring, 18, studies the Level 3 Public Services course at the College’s Southend Campus and hopes to become a Police Officer in the future.

After volunteering in the cadets for 10 weeks, she secured an interview with the Special Constabulary and has been successful in her application.

She said: “I joined the cadets because I wanted to volunteer, we learn lots about team building and help out at public events.

“My main goal is to join the force full-time and I thought becoming a Special was the next logical step. I hope to start my training in March and be ready to take on the position by summer.”

Ellie from Hockley added: “Joining the Specials will give me experience of working in the Police force. The job appeals to me because I like the fact that every day is different, you never know what you’re going to have to deal with. I want to work my way up, I really enjoy helping and serving the local community.”

David Birnie, Public Services Lecturer, said: “This is great news for Ellie. She’s well on the way to achieving her dream and we hope our course has helped prepare her for this opportunity.”
