Media Make-Up students from South Essex College had the opportunity to work backstage at the University of East London’s fashion show.
Level 3 Fashion, Theatre and Media Hair and Make-up Studies students produced the hair and make-up looks for models who walked the runway at UEL’s ‘Character in the Clothes’ show, an internal showcase put on in preparation for Graduate Fashion Week.
UEL Fashion Design Programme Leader, David Thomas, approached the College with the opportunity and students jumped at the chance to further enhance their skills and industry experience.
Workshops were held with the College students and degree fashion designers so they could brief them on putting together looks to match their fashion creations.
The show took place at the University’s Stratford Campus. Students prepped their models with the fashion team in the busy backstage area, experiencing a very realistic industry working environment.
Student Laura Bird, said: “We had to set up for the UEL fashion show, making sure we knew the briefs to follow for each model. It was great to gain experience on what it would be like to work on a real catwalk production.”
Megan Janaway, another student who worked on the show, added: “We had to time manage ourselves efficiently to meet show times. We also had to work in small confined spaces which gave us an insight in to what it would be like in the industry’.
Charli Bignell, Course Leader, said: “We were immensely proud of the students involved, they produced great looks in a very fast paced and demanding atmosphere. They were all extremely professional and showcased their excellent technical skills.”
Nicki Kelly, Head of Department, said: “I attended this event to support our students, it was such a fantastic opportunity for them and I want to build on this connection with the university for future students.
“Everyone involved at UEL praised the girls, they faced some challenging situations with the designers and models but this did not seem to faze them. Our students worked so well as a team and it was a really proud moment to see their finished looks on the catwalk.”
