Students and staff from all across all campuses of South Essex College gathered together to take part in the Sport Relief Mile, just one of the various events taking place across the country in aid of the Comic Relief-related charity.
The 75 staff and students from Southend, Basildon and Thurrock joined forces at the Basildon Sporting Village to take part in either a one, three or six mile run; with everyone taking part raising money supporting vulnerable people in both the UK and the world's poorest countries.
Cooling down after the event, Kelly Horsup, the Student Union Entertainment & Activities Officer, from the Basildon and Thurrock campuses, said: “The event was a good opportunity for connecting with others and being a part of something bigger than ourselves, I really enjoyed the social element to the event because I could meet new people.”
Students and staff may have jostled for position on the track but were united in their praise for the well-organised event. Leanne Couch, Student Life Sports Maker at the Southend Campus, added: “Events like this set a real positive example to students and staff alike, uniting students together from different courses and campuses and getting them all active.”
One student who echoed that was Billy Mansell, 19, from the Southend Campus. The Level 3 Public Services student who successfully completed the six-mile run said: “It’s a good cause and I just wanted to give something back to the community.”
Legs might have been sore, brows may have been sweaty but the coffers were full and the event was a huge success, raising almost £300 for Sport Relief so far, with some money still yet to be collected.
